Leaders from the City of Austin, Travis County and the Austin Independent School District (AISD) will join forces tomorrow to call on the State to fund schools and provide property tax relief for taxpayers across Central Texas.

On Wednesday Dec. 5, ahead of the upcoming State legislative session, representatives from Central Texas will gather at the Austin Convention Center for a symposium to highlight the challenges they claim are posed by State revenue cap proposals and the State’s current system of school funding.

The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. with remarks from Austin City Manager Spencer Cronk, Austin Mayor Steve Adler, Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt and AISD Board President Geronimo M. Rodriguez, Jr. They will be followed by brief presentations on revenue caps and school funding by finance experts from AISD, the County and the City, after which City Manager Cronk will moderate a Q&A with State Delegates.

In a joint letter, Mayor Adler, Judge Eckhardt and Board President Rodriguez said: “We can think of no bigger issue to bring us together than property taxes and school funding. Those of us who were elected to represent the Austin area are acutely aware of how these issues are intertwined and how impacts on both or either of these items has an effect on us all.

“In light of these two issues coming up during this legislative session, the City of Austin is hosting an event to share and discuss financial forecast presentations on the impact of revenue caps and school finance on the Austin region. As we all strive to best serve the people of Austin, our partnership is crucial to our success. We hope you will join us as we prepare our partnership for the 86th Legislative Session.”
