Only one Austin ISD school with confederate namesake gets renamed

SCHOOL DESK

The Austin school board votes to change the name of one campus following more than a year of debate over Confederate names:
Allan Elementary has now become Anita Ferales Coy Elementary, named after its former principal. As for the remaining four — Lanier, Reagan, Eastside Memorial’s Johnston Campus, and Fulmore Middle — no action has been taken.  Trustee Ann Teich is opposed, in part because the board isn’t considering name changes for Austin High, Bowie High, or Lamar Middle. “To not include those names is inconsistent with the reasoning used to justify the other name changes,”said Teich.
But even more so, she added, new estimates show that just to change Lanier’s name alone would cost taxpayers $400,000 at a time in which AISD already struggles to fund teacher salaries and other district operations. The previous estimate was only $77,000.
So, for possibly the indefinite future, the remaining campus names will remain unchanged.
