The AISD Board of Trustees is expected to vote Monday night on the renaming of five schools that are currently named after Confederate leaders. It’s a vote that has been more than a year in the making.
The schools in question are:
- The Allan Facility (formerly Allan Elementary)
- Fulmore Middle School
- Sidney Lanier High School
- John H. Reagan High School
- Eastside Memorial High School’s Johnston campus
Supporters of the name changes are still at odds over Sidney Lanier High School and John H. Reagan High School. One of the suggestions is to simply drop the first names of each of the schools’ namesakes, keeping the names Lanier and Reagan in place. That has been a source of contention among activists who say that would not go far enough to rid AISD of the Confederate ties.
The school board has indicated that it will not be taking up the name change agenda item until late in the evening. It’s expected the issue won’t be discussed until after 10:00 p.m.
