A year ago, the city council chose to do away with Austin’s long-standing curfew for kids, both day and night. Supporters said it would reduce a racial disparity in which non-white kids were being cited more often. The argument against lifting the curfew was that crime would rise, especially at night, but Morgan Craven with Texas Appleseed says there’s been no sign of that.
She says there has been a 21-percent drop in kids being ticketed or arrested at night, however the data is still not in for the daytime so it’s unclear if lifting that curfew has had any effect.
