Ohio judge could put the future of Major League Soccer in Austin in jeopardy

Last month, the city council came to a long-debated decision to begin working with Precourt Sports Ventures on bringing the Columbus Crew soccer team to Austin, and to build them a new stadium at land in North Austin known as McKalla Place.  But Ohio law said owners who use taxpayer-funded facilities or who get state financial assistance can’t move to another city without giving at least six months notice, and local a chance to buy the team first.

Today a judge is hearing arguments from the Ohio Attorney General to keep the Columbus Crew where it is, potentially throwing a wrench in Austin’s hopes of getting their first professional sports team.
