Bastrop Sheriff Maurice Cook was recently accused of targeting immigrants when a traffic sting he conducted netted 13 people in the country illegally. Cook told Newsradio KLBJ immigration status was never discussed by his deputies. He added the only people who would find that out are the people at the county jail.
A similar operation is planned to catch drunks on the road during Labor Day, and activist group, Grassroots Leadership accuses Cook of trying to trap illegals again. In a statement, the Sheriff’s office said this weekend’s initiative is only about keeping other drivers safe.
