Despite what critics believe, city staffers say great strides have been made in terms of public safety

The City of Austin says public safety ranks have grown dramatically in the four years of the 10-1 city council.  Deputy Chief Financial Officer Ed Van Eenoo said police have gotten 104 new employees, including civilians, and he also said along with 68 firefighters, two new fire stations have been built and construction of two more is being expedited.

Still, groups like the police union say the council hasn’t done nearly enough to keep up with growth.
