Proposition J has gotten very little support from most of the Austin City Council. Most council members argue that giving the public the final say on any changes to the land development code would cause too much of a delay in getting things done, but attorney Fred Lewis believes the voters should have the final say, and in doing so they’ll rein in some of the power of the council.
Austin Mayor Steve Adler says the 10-1 council was elected to make those decisions, and so the power should remain in the hands of city leaders.
