As Austin continues to face nightly overcrowding at the ARCH homeless shelter in downtown, city leaders are looking at other options to get people off the street. Mayor Pro Tem Kathie Tovo wants the ability to invest city money into things that will provide long-term housing to as many people as possible.
One of the places being considered is the Health South Rehabilitation Center, which she says would be a prime spot to create new low-cost housing
To do that, the council is looking a Tax Increment Financing zone which would redirect tax revenue from one area into the construction of things like new shelters, transitional housing, and subsidized apartments.
