The Federal Transit Administration on Thursday announced $25.9-million in grant funding for  five transit providers in Texas as part of the CARES Act, including a $6.4-million infusion into Central Texas.

According to the FTA, the recipients must use the grants to support public transit operational, administrative, and preventive maintenance costs during the COVID-19 pandemic.  The Texas cities receiving those grants include:

  • The City of Brownsville in Cameron County will receive $7.6 million.
  • The Concho Valley Transit District in Tom Green County will receive $4.2 million.
  • The Golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission will receive $3.1 million for Victoria Transit in Victoria County.
  • The City of San Marcos in Hays County will receive $6.4 million.
  • The City of Wichita Falls in Wichita County will receive $4.6 million.

“This historic $25 billion in grant funding will ensure our nation’s public transportation systems can continue to provide services to the millions of Americans who continue to depend on them,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao.

Back in May, Chao announced a $101.9-million allocation toward Capital Metro in Austin.

“While Texans continue doing everything they can in response to the spread of the coronavirus, we in Washington should give them everything they need to succeed,” said Texas Senator John Cornyn.
