Austin’s legal attempt to install the controversial Paid sick leave ordinance has been shot down by the Texas Supreme Court.
Texas’ highest court denied the City of Austin’s petition to review the Paid Sick Leave lawsuit which put a stay on its official start. The Conservative think tank, Texas Public Policy Foundation sued to block the ordinance along with local businesses and called the court’s decision a victory.
They added this should be a clear signal to other Texas cities. TPPF’s general counsel Robert Henneke said in a statement, “Texas Courts are unanimous that cities in Texas lack the lawful power to mandate paid sick leave that interferes with the ability of employers and employees to negotiate wages and benefits.”
With the court’s refusal, TPPF officials continued, Texas cities should withdraw these, “unconstitutional ordinances.”
