The University of Texas Student Senate and others are calling for big changes centered around social justice and racism in the wake of the George Floyd and police brutality protests sweeping the nation and globe.
The Student Senate posted a list of demands on their twitter page this week, demanding the university calling for big changes on and off campus on the heels of the George Floyd protests. Now more UT students and now Student athletes are demanding changes on campus, including the renaming a few campus buildings, the addition of student orientation classes that cover and discuss racism on campus and its history, specifically pointing to the spirit group the Texas Cowboys. And getting rid of the Eyes of Texas song. The students say a new song should be written with the help of musicians of color. UT Athletics Director Chris Del Conte tweets, he is willing to talk about the demands the Athletes are making.
The Student senate also wants the University to divest form the Austin police and UT police departments, removing them from student spaces both on and off campus.

I am always willing to have meaningful conversations regarding any concerns our student-athletes have. We will do the same in this situation and look forward to having those discussions. https://t.co/kat3B9hqvo
