Condemning the actions of the Austin City and Dallas County leaders, Governor Greg Abbott produced a new proposal to crack down on cities that defund their police departments, revoking their ability to annex, and give give area’s annexed by the city the ability to vote and reverse their annexation.
At a Thursday press conference, Gov. Abbott joined other State officials at the offices of the Austin Police Association, and surrounded by officers, decried the City Council’s historic decision to take about $150 million out of APD’s budget.
In a statement Austin’s Mayor Steve Adler wrote Austin has not defunded its police, nor does it support any plan to do so, and he is unaware of any elected official who believes differently.
