On Wednesday, Governor Greg Abbott announced that bars across the state could begin opening their doors on Wednesday, October 14. The final decision, however, is being left up to county judges.
Austin Mayor Steve Adler said Wednesday that just because bars can begin opening on Wednesday does not mean Travis County Judge Sam Biscoe will actually clear them to do so.
“The county judge will get information and advice and suggestions from people, both from the experts and the industry,” he said.
Biscoe has not given an indication of what sort of timeline he’s considering.
The feeling is very different in Williamson County where Judge Bill Gravell is already chomping at the bit to get bars open.
“It is time for all of our businesses to be open to serve our public while following the Governor’s health protocols to be safe. Our county residents have shown that they can be smart and protect themselves and others, so I will be choosing for Williamson County to opt in on October 14. This is another step forward for us as a community, and we can do this safely and wisely,” said Gravell.
In Bastrop County, Judge Paul Pape initially expressed some reservations about Abbott’s announcement. However, after seeking some legal advice, Pape now says he will authorize all Bastrop County bars to reopen on Wednesday.
Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra has indicated he may want to wait, but he has not elaborated beyond that.
