Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar will send cities, counties, transit systems and, special purpose taxing districts a total of $677.3 million in local sales tax allocations for April, 3.5% less than in April 2020. The April allocations are based on sales made in February by businesses that report tax monthly.
The allocations are down across-the-board. For Texas cities, $436 million will be distributed, reflecting a 2.7% drop from April 2020. The drop is significantly more for counties, which will receive $40 million. That’s more than 8% less than a year ago. Public transit systems, which will see almost 6% less than a year ago, will receive $145.7 million.
The smallest disparity is among special purpose taxing districts, which in Texas include things like water conservation, toll roads, hospitals, libraries, utilities, and fire control efforts. That allocation of $55.5 million is .1% less than April 2020.
The decline in allocations can also be seen in a city-by-city look at the report. For the City of Austin, the exact total for April sales tax allocations is $17,165,020.93. In April of 2020, the allocation was $18,419,574.42, representing a decline of just under 7%.
