Governor Abbott signed legislation into law that will penalize cities and counties that defund their local law enforcement.
In total four separate bills protecting police were signed.
HB 1900 financially hits cities that pull funding from local police, Governor Abbott said, “this law will freeze property tax revenue for cities over 250,000 in population that defund the police.”
SB 23 deals with the Counties, the Governor explains, “Any county with a population with more than a million will have to receive voter approval before defunding their county law enforcement.”
The governor also signed into law enhanced criminal penalties for protesters assaulting officers with lazer pointers and fireworks and jail time for protesters blocking emergency vehicles.
