The City of Austin and the Austin Independent School District have awarded federal grants totaling $448,245, which officials believe will encourage and improve community policing efforts.
The funding comes through the Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) as part of the Community Policing Development (CPD) program.
“Making sure our communities are safe is of critical importance, and one of the best ways we can do that is by ensuring our law enforcement officers are working hand-in-glove with community policing efforts,” said Texas Senator John Cornyn. “I applaud this announcement and will continue to do everything I can to keep Austinites safe.”
The City of Austin will receive $200,000 through the De-Escalation Law Enforcement Agency Grant. Austin ISD will recieve $248,245 for the implementation of Crisis Intervention Teams, or CITs.
