City of Kyle Rescinds ‘Fajita Drive’ Name Change

Only a week after voting to rename Rebel Drive, the Kyle City Council has voted to walk back that decision.  Last week, council opted to rename the street Fajita Drive in honor of Juan Antonio “Sonny” Falcón, also known as the “Fajita King,” due to his introduction of the fajita taco to Central Texas back in 1969.  According to city leaders, the name change was an effort to honor something that many Texans love, but the decision left many people upset over the lack of public input on the matter.

Other critics have taken issue with the fact that the city opted to rename the street after the dish, but not specifically the man who created it.

On Tuesday, the city council convened for a specially called meeting in which a vote was cast to rescind the name change, although that vote will not revert the street’s name back to the Rebel Drive.  Instead, the city will refer to the street as West Ranch to Market Road 150, or RM 150, until a committee can drum up new options.  The framework for that committee is expected to be discussed on September 1.

Council voted to set aside cost savings in the amount of $5,346 to establish grant funds for residents impacted by the possible future renaming of RM 150.
