Austin Community College District nurses will be fanning out into the community alongside member of the Austin Fire Department to help provide no-cost wellness screenings this week.

Students in ACC’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program will work side-by-side with the Austin Fire Department on Friday, May 6, as part of AFD’s Red Angels program.

The Red Angels program will focus on Dove Springs, Colony Park, Del Valle, and East Austin. Nursing students will conduct health checks, including blood pressure and glucose screenings, while AFD checks homes for fire hazards and working smoke detectors. Following each check, AFD will provide the residents with a booklet that includes information on where to find free health support, food, clothes, and more to reduce non-emergency calls to first responders.

The Red Angels program provides nursing students some of the necessary clinical training they need to graduate.

This spring marks the first return of the Red Angels program since the pandemic began.
