Austin ISD leaders and staffers introduced students of the former Reagan High School to its new name.
It has the same students, same teachers, same mascot and even the same school colors Columbia Blue and white, but Austin ISD Trustees celebrate Reagan High School’s new name, Northeast Early College High School.
The school year is already well underway but district officials held a ribbon cutting and renaming ceremony Thursday (September 6th) after school. AISD SchoolboardTrustee Arati Singh told students this was a big move for progress, “I can’t tell you how proud I am to be here as part of this huge step towards racial equity in our school district. This name change is about the kids, it is about nothing else but the kids and this community.”
The School’s interim Principal Alisia Longoria said they are proud of the new start this offers, “we are really just doing a branding overhaul to embrace the community and ensure everyone is included at Northeast Early College High School.
Northeast (Reagan High) is among a few other AISD schools which were renamed since their previous namesakes had ties to the US Confederacy.
