More than $1.7-million is expected to be included in the new Austin school district budget for security upgrades. Director of Accountability Linda Ready says money needs to be spent to protect both the physical and emotional safety of every student in the district. Ready also says that not only do students have to be safe, they have to feel safe too.
The money will be spent on five new officers, an additional emergency manager, bus tracking for all students, and extra cameras at all middle and high schools.
As AISD trustees consider the new budget tonight, they’re also having to deal with a massive payment to the state to the tune of nearly $670-million for what’s known as recapture. That’s leaving the district with $775-million in operating costs as it also considers a 1.5-percent salary increase for all employees.
