APD to start using aerial drones in their fatal crash investigations

APD Highway Enforcement’s Lt. Blake Johnson says the department has bought two drones and a standalone computer. Travis County paid for the mapping software. Johnson says using the drones is expected to make what has been a six to eight hour investigation process closer to two.

Johnson says the drones can make 3D pictures of crash scenes which is a new capability.

The total cost: around twenty thousand dollars.
