Austin City Council is preparing to take first big step in the land development code rewrite.
City manager Spencer Cronk charged the city council to come up with some policy direction and to hammer out what the code rewrite should and can do.
Councilmember Ann Kitchen has her mind focused on a few major priorities. Among them affordable housing, Kitchen said as council looks to focus more home construction along the city’s major corridors Kitchen wants to tack on an affordable housing requirement.
Kitchen also wants to protect the city’s green infrastructure. “As we think about how we’re going to change the land development code, we need to think about things like parks in neighborhoods, how we protect the environment, and how we also look at things like flood mitigation.”
Another big priority for Kitchen is making sure 130-thousand new units can be built in the Austin area, among them 60-thousand affordable units.
