Some Austin City Councilmembers believe the Council stumbled in their anti-gentrification efforts with the final approval of the Domain on Riverside project.
However Councilmember Jimmy Flannigan said the City made great progress on the deal so it includes affordable and supportive housing. “There are other older apartment complexes that without any affordability requirements…redeveloped into condos or townhomes that are $500,000 to $700,000 each.”
Flannigan said, with this redevelopment its going to provide some long term affordability that, ” voting no,” was not going to.
Flannigan explained he understands the frustrations felt by some, he called it unfortunate that the current tenants will see their apartment complex changed, but added Texas City’s don’t have many tools to use against a property owner looking to redevelop.
