ATX Mayor Adler Calls for state help at Texas Dems Dinner

Austin Mayor Steve Adler called on the state to spend big on homelessness during a speech to the Texas Democrat Party.

Adler began his speech with a joke, likening the State of Texas to wartime invaders, “When we read it we thought that maybe he was telling us, he was going to lay siege to Austin at the end of the month.” Adler’s tone then shifted noticeably from the optimism that was expressed last week over receiving state aid for help with homelessness, to one of more skepticism, saying he doubts the state really wants to help, but if it does, and he believes it should, Adler hopes it’s to the level that California helps its cities:”Just a few months ago, it gave $650-million to the cities in its state, $145-million to Los Angeles alone.” Governor Abbott has given Austin until November 1 to fix its homeless ordinances.
