ATX Mayor suggests stopping CodeNEXT process

Austin Mayor Steve Adler is saying ‘not so fast’ on the land use rules re-write CodeNEXT.

Mayor Adler proposed Austin City Council cease the CodeNEXT process. He didn’t call for completely scrapping the $2 million dollar process that ballooned to over $8 million but did say he’s in favor of stopping what’s been done and having City Manager Spencer Cronk devise a new way to re-write the land use rules. Adler said the current code is exacerbating problems of affordability, gentrification, flooding, and traffic. The current process was poisoned with misinformation and fear-mongering, said Adler, and he doesn’t think any consensus will be reached.

CodeNEXT is a comprehensive plan to revise the land development code currently under consideration by the City of Austin. The code covers zoning, land use development, transportation, environmental protections, utilities, historic preservation, affordable housing, and signs.
