The Austin City Council has approved a new contract with Travis County Integral Care for a rapid re-housing program to get homeless people off of the street and into permanent housing. The $2-million adds to the tens of millions of other tax dollars already being pumped into the fight against chronic homelessness.
The program’s main focus will be on people living within the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH) who qualify, however council member Ann Kitchen is pushing to have others not staying at the ARCH also be covered by this new contract.
“We do have some individuals who have been identified for a coordinated assessment in other parts of the community, and I would like these funds to alos be considered for those individuals also,” said Kitchen.
The program offers case management, connects homeless people with landlords, provides employment assistance, and medical care when necessary.
