Austin City Council approves new police Equipment expenditure and dives into body camera policy

Body Cameras

Austin City Council approved a contract for new Police Tazers and body cameras.

And due to an incident where body camera footage proved, two Officers were lying about the tazing of a man already on the ground, and activist pressure, council directed City Manager Spencer Cronk to push policy so body camera footage could get to the public faster.
Cronk said Council could see something written pretty soon, “Certainly a briefing is reasonable. And I know we were close in consultation both with APD, community stake holders, and the Office of Police Oversight….I believe the end of next month seems reasonable.”

By approving the contract in yesterday’s session APD says the city saved more than 5-million dollars on the 48-million dollar deal.
