Austin City Councilmember Greg Casar is not giving up on his fight to force landlords to rent to people with welfare vouchers.

Austin had a rule in place forcing property owners to take apartment vouchers, but the State overturned it. Casar said this is clear discrimination and finds the lack of action by the Texas Court of Appeals unacceptable. “There are alot of steps we can take…legal…practical. More than anything else I think we are going to push to make sure the Court of Appeals actually has to issue a ruling.” Casar added, the fight needs to continue, “And have the Court of Appeal explain, whether they actually think this is legalized discrimination or not. Because I don’t believe that any court should support legalized discrimination.”

Casar said the Appeals Court is abdicating it’s responsibilities and believes the city can force it into action. And should the court side with what Casar sees as discrimination, he believes that mean’s the city will take this case to a higher court, moving the case forward.
