Austin completes review of Austin Water’s handling of water bill spikes

The City of Austin has completed its review of fraudulent water meter readings that led to thousands of abnormal spikes in water bills last year.  Monica Joyner with Austin Energy said the review shows the utility often didn’t take customer complaints seriously
Joyner said the utility showed a lack of empathy, gave customers a limited window to file disputes, and was dismissive to customer concerns due to a belief that the meter readings were completely accurate.
The utility said it should’ve listened to customers complaints, allowed for more time in the review process, and conducted a more thorough investigation into why thousands of bills showed glaring anomalies from month to month.
