The Austin City Council Mobility Committee was briefed Thursday by Mike Trimble, Director of the City of Austin’s Corridor Program Office, on major projects moving forward as part of the Corridor Construction Program. Primarily funded through the 2016 Mobility Bond, the Corridor Construction Program includes the design and construction of comprehensive improvements across nine major Austin roadways.

To date, the Corridor Program has completed construction on more than 20  projects on Austin’s major corridors, including North Lamar Blvd., East Riverside Dr., Slaughter Ln. and Burnet Rd.  In what the city calls a “critical year,” Trimble said $150 million in bid or construction for major projects is anticipated this year.

“The work that is planned for 2022 will have major, positive impacts on the Austin community for years to come,” said Assistant City Manager for mobility, Gina Fiandaca. “The kinds of infrastructure improvements we’re implementing mean a safer, more walkable, bikeable and transit-accessible city. That translates to a greener, more sustainable Austin with better, safer access to businesses and community resources,” said Fiandaca.

The first of the larger construction projects anticipated by the Corridor Program Office to begin in 2022 are Airport Blvd. between North Lamar Blvd. and 55th St., and on Burnet Rd. between Koenig Ln. and White Horse Tr. Other major corridors that could see major construction this year are North Lamar Blvd., Slaughter Ln., William Cannon Dr., and South Lamar Blvd.

These projects are funded by the voter-approved 2016 Mobility Bond, which allocated $482 million for corridor construction.

“We are proud of the work that we’ve been able to accomplish up to this point, getting these really important safety and mobility projects on the ground,” said Trimble. “But the big work lies ahead, and we’re going to see even more construction hit the streets in the coming months. The council-approved Corridor Construction Program includes nine corridors and we’ll be getting those out to bid or working on six of those nine corridors in the next year,” said Trimble.
