Austin Unemployment Fell in September

According to data released Friday from the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin-Round Rock MSA* unemployment rate decreased slightly from August to September, and is now at 3.4%**, as represented by 51,540 unemployed residents. Key takeaways include:

  • The Austin metro unemployment rate remains below the Texas (4.1%) national rates (3.9%) in September.
  • According to TWC, the Austin metro gained 10,200 jobs from August to September. The region has experienced an annual growth rate of 2.0%, representing the collective addition of 27,300 jobs since September 2023.
  • Furthermore, TWC reports unemployment in the Capital Area/Travis County region*** decreased slightly to 3.3% from August to September, representing 29,684 unemployed residents.

September Job Growth/Losses by Industry in the Austin-Round Rock MSA: 

  • Monthly Increases:Industries that experienced regional job growth from August to September include government (5,100), private education and health services (1,900) and leisure and hospitality (1,300).
  • Other industries that experienced monthly job growth include professional and business services (1,200), trade, transportation and utilities (1,100) and mining, logging and construction (500).
  • Monthly Decreases: Financial activities (-400), other services (-300) and information (-200) experienced regional job losses from August to September.
  • Annual Increases: Mining, logging and construction experienced the greatest regional job growth over the past 12 months with an increase of 6.2%, followed by leisure and hospitality (4.8%).
    • Other industries that experienced annual job growth include other services (3.8%), private education and health services (3.8%), government (2.3%), trade, transportation and utilities (1.9%), financial activities (0.6%), manufacturing (0.3%) and professional and business services (0.1%).
  • Annual Decreases: Information (-4.6%) experienced an annual decrease from September 2023 to September 2024.
