Austin’s City Demographer is worried about what kind of impact a citizenship question on the upcoming census will have.
Some City officials and activists fear it will drive immigrant families to not answer the census.
They say this could mean a loss in federal funding and a loss of political power.
The City’s Ryan Robinson says the last time citizenship came up on the census was in the fifties. Robinson said they’ve thought about implementing a policy or even boycott of the question but say, this would only invite government officials to people homes.
Robinson believes by not answering the question that would open up homes to be visited by officials.
