Austin City Council approves deregulating taxicab franchises in the city. Transportation Director Rob Spillar says the reason for the overhaul of the rules is to significantly reduce the level of regulation on the taxi industry to give them the best ability to compete within the market.

This means taxi companies will be able to choose their own fares, fleet sizes and colors with city approval. The new rules will take effect next month.
