Bill That Would Increase State Sales Tax Fails to Pass in Texas Senate

Interior of Texas State Senate

The issue of sales tax has become intertwined with property tax reform this legislative session, but this week the Senate opted to shelve any plan to raise the sales tax as a way to offset any loss in property tax revenue.

Republican Party of Texas chairman James Dickey thinks sales tax is really the most streamlined way to reach any real tax reform.

“This is a more fair, more broad tax and its got the added bonus of a big portion of it being paid by out-of-state folks who come in for tourism.” says Dickey.

It was proposed as a way to help buy down property taxes, and Dickey still sees it as the most equitable avenue to real tax reform in Texas.

“It would’ve meant a cut in total taxes at every income level, no matter what income level you were it was going to be a cut.”
