Some lawmakers say Austin is taking far too much advantage of a tax abatement law allowing the city to purchase tax-exempt land in other taxing jurisdictions, including Hays County. James Quintero with the Texas Public Policy Foundation says Austin’s land deals are hurting the very people the Austin city council claims to want to help.
Senate Bill 1771 could force Austin to pay taxes on all of the Hays County land it owns. The city says it buys the land to protect environmentally sensitive areas.
