A House/Senate Conference Committee meets for the first time today to begin hashing out the final version of the state budget. On the table are things like school finance and property tax relief, including a leadership plan to increase the sales tax by a penny to pay for property tax relief. Rice University Political Scientist Mark Jones doesn’t see a lot of support for that idea. He says Democrats opposed it and so do Republicans, who see it for what it is; a tax increase.
