Capital metro is expected to lose a founding city tonight

The City of Leander prepares to part ways with Capital Metro.

Capital Metro is hoping the Leander City Council will change its mind about ending its decades-long agreement with the transit agency, but Mayor Troy Hill appears to be standing his ground.  He said Cap Metro’s rates should be adjusted accordingly based on the size of each city, but they are not. “People need to ask themselves, why is it Leander is one of the only small cities around Austin that’s still in the system.” He said Cedar Park and Pflugerville dumped out of their agreements in the early 2000s because it was too costly.

Hill believes Cap Metro’s funding model is not conducive for cities the size of Leander, he added the transit agency needs to seriously reassess its rates for smaller cities where sales tax is the life blood of the economy, “Then guess what, you can go to Cedar Park, You can to George Town, you can go to Dripping Springs. All these other cities around us and truly make this a regional transportation system.”

Hill said the onus is on Capital Metro to make the service more worthwhile, not the City of Leander.
The city council will take an official vote tonight.
