A double murder remains under investigation by the Austin Police Department.
On Saturday, September 21, 2024, at approximately 12:08 p.m., officers responded to a check welfare call in the 2300 block of Brookhill Drive, near the area of Menchaca Road and Stassney Lane. Multiple callers expressed concern about the couple living in the house, and noted that a man was refusing to open the door.
Officers later identified that man as as Chevy Kyler Monaghan, and confronted him in the driveway. According to reports, Monaghan claimed that his grandparents were inside the residence and were unharmed. But after officers obtained made entry, they records show they discovered Monaghan’s grandparents — Shari Mallory-Maxa and Anthony Maxa — dead in the hallway with apparent gunshot wounds.
Investigators later determined Monaghan shot and killed his grandparents in the home.
Monaghan has been charged with capital murder and was booked in to the Travis County Jail.
