With Judge Julie Kocurek’s would-be assassin sentenced to life in prison for shooting at her in 2015, she told reporters, she and her family can start getting their lives back to normal. Outside the courtroom after Chimene Onyeri was sentenced Kocurek said she’s having a hard time forgiving him but she’s thankful every day to be given a chance at life again.
The sentence was handed down in Austin federal court by Judge Lee Yeakel. Yeakel said Onyeri was a threat to the public as well as public servants, Judge Kocurek expressed her relief.
“I just feel so good, to wake up in the morning and know that my family is safe from Mr. Onyeri and his associates.”
Onyeri was also ordered to pay restitution for his financial crimes.
