City Council considers rule surrounding petition drives at city libraries

City Council considering changing rules about allowing petition drives/ demonstrations at city libraries

UPDATE:

Austin City Council has directed City Manager Spencer Cronk to review city ordinances surrounding petitioners and protestors on city property, specifically, Austin public libraries and the Palmer Events Center. Council wants a memo before their last meeting of the year.

This comes after anti-CodeNEXT petitioners were told to leave an Austin library last year.

ORIGINAL:

When anti-CodeNEXT petitioners were told to leave an Austin library last year, that started a conversation that will end up on City Council’s lap today.

The question is whether Austin should change its policy prohibiting petition drives or other civic engagement on library property.  Austin Library Commission Chair Chad Williams said the rule should be changed.

Right now only Right-Of-Ways are clear for such things but Williams said no two library properties in Austin are the same, thus the need for the new rule.
