City Council to Consider Fertility Treatments for Public Employees

Austin City Hall

The Austin City Council is already expected to have a full plate when it convenes on Thursday, May 19, and one of the items up for discussion could pave the way for taxpayer-funded fertility treatments for city employees.

Item 35 on the council agenda is a proposal to:

“Approve a resolution declaring the City’s support for inclusive reproductive care, amending the City’s legislative agenda to include support for The Access to Infertility Treatment and Care Act, and directing the City Manager to study and report back on the inclusion of family building support, such as fertility and adoption and fostering assistance, for City employees.”

Further details are unclear at this time, including cost estimates or specific funding streams.

The proposal has strong support already, with sponsors including Mayor Steve Adler, Councilwoman Natasha Harper-Madison, Councilwoman Vanessa Fuentes, Councilman José ‘Chito’ Vela, Councilwoman Kathie Tovo.

Last week, the Austin City Council approved a Universal Basic Income pilot program, pulling nearly $1.2 million from the General Fund to provide $1000 monthly checks to 85 families or individuals for a year.  The General Fund is kept full through taxes paid in by City of Austin residents.
