The vote will be in August and If approved, five tracts of land would be re-zoned to create a massive mixed-use development. Michael Whellan, who represents the developer, says the new plan envisions up to 565 low-income units. Outside City Hall, police beefed up presence to deal with protesters of this vote. The group says it will further gentrify the neighborhood.
One activist with the group ‘Defend Our Hoods’ stormed the dais, throwing papers at commission members and hurling profanities as others shouted from the back of the room:
Michael Whellan, who represents the Presidium Group developers, said the vision is for a major mixed-use development near Pleasant Valley and Riverside across five tracts of land that includes a total of 4700 residential units, or in other words, people making 60-percent the median family income.
The proposal also highlights a possible 600 hotel rooms, 4-million square feet of office space, and 60-thousand square feet of medical space.
