City leaders hope a public-private corporation will be an answer to ending homelessness

This week, Austin announced the hiring of its first-ever homeless czar, known officially as the Homeless Strategy Officer.

A plan to create a Local Government Corporation in Austin is widely expected to win approval tomorrow from the city council.  The LGC would bring the public and private sector together for answers to homeless issues, but unlike other cities that use LGCs, Mayor Steve Adler does not want Austin’s to be anything other than a fundraiser.  Adler says Austin’s newly appointed Homeless Strategy Officer would be in charge of overseeing the actual operation.

The LGC is being looked as as an alternative to the usual taxpayer-driven funding, which could hit $63-million next year just for homelessness.
