A search for the next chief at the Austin Public Department will soon begin.
Current Police Chief Brian Manley is retiring on Sunday after 30 years on the force. City Manager Spencer Cronk says there will be a nationwide search for his replacement. He hopes to finish the search by August. “In the meantime,” he continues, “I’m appointing Assistant Chief Joseph Chanon as the interim chief while the search takes place.”
Cronk calls this the beginning of the city’s effort to “reimagine public safety.”
The Austin City Council will meet on Thursday and will take a formal vote to confirm Chacon as the interim chief.
