City of Austin come out against property tax reform bill

Tax reform

The Austin City Council has now officially opposed House Bill 2.

The bill would require the council to ask the public for permission to raise property tax revenue beyond 2.5{6d294a0824f6f808f1cc9dcde10d35acd237638cfa4e8dd876851c8906eac7a1}. But council doesn’t want the public to have that much say in this, and so Mayor Steve Adler says anything less than 3.8-percent will be disastrous, “with affordability, with homelessness, with mobility in our city. We need the opportunity to act.”
City officials warn they would need to make cuts and those could come from homeless services, roads, and public safety. Adler said HB2 would only save you around $3 on your tax bill while Austin would lose $52-million within just three years.
