This was a priority in 2016, and voters approved almost $38-million to be used solely for adding almost 2600 miles of new sidewalk.
But those millions apparently won’t go nearly that far, according to Kelsey Thompson, with the city auditor’s office said the little work that has been done so far has not been spread out equally, and the bond money is only enough to build 60 miles of sidewalks which is about 10{2a63e07d84fe12ceff3a79b3b7d16ceb8565bd2470b26c53e2419132d99be4c6} of priority sidwalks.
Not only that, as the city regularly touts its commitment to inclusively for disabled Austinites, the audit finds in at least 15-percent of the cases, city inspectors did not require engineers to undergo any accessibility inspections on sidewalks that have already been built.
