City of Austin discussing options for future of the Convention Center

The Austin City Council has gotten a look at recommendations for the future of the Convention Center.  There are multiple recommendations, one of which would be demolishing the current building and moving it.

Principal investigator Dean Almy said Austin needs to find the perfect balance.

Another calls for doubling the space to the west, or a different option deals with new private development cropping up around it.  Almy also said all options dramatically expand the six block radius.

As one might expect, no option is cheap.  They range from $400-million to more than $1-billion.

Hotel Occupancy Taxes and private investment would be required to make this a reality.
