City of Austin looks to crack down on unregistered short term rental properties

The City of Austin says about 25{fbcf2a5c42fe71624047a18c73673849799bd5d53cdb5d8ca16f4833367ca63d} of short term rentals in the city are registered and there looking to start cracking down on the rest. The Texas Public Policy Foundation says STR’s aren’t the problem here, its the ordinance.

Foundation’s Chase Weldon said the city set itself up to spend millions on enforcement because they overly regulate STR’s, he said it would be much cheaper to just fix the code to allow it.

Weldon said type 2 rentals are properties that the owner does not live in, but actively rents out throughout the year.
