City touts engagement process for Strategic Mobility Plan

With the passage of Austin’s Strategic Mobility Plan yesterday by Austin City Council, Transportation Department Division Manager Cole Kitten said the city can align mobility priorities among all the departments and outside agencies such as Cap Metro and CARTS as well as governing bodies like CTRMA. “Within the Transportation Department, now we have a comprehensive mobility plan to use to start developing projects; whether it’s for vehicle capacity or priority transit projects and bicycle projects.”

As the department was developing its Strategic Mobility Plan, they were focused on getting people to weigh in on it. Kitten says along with the usual inputters, they sought out four other specific groups of Austinites. “Those were youths-people under 25, seniors who are people 65 and over, people with mobility impairments, and historically under-served communities of people of color.”

The department says more than ten thousand people weighed in on the ASMP over the past two years. Planner Warner Cook said: “We heard a lot about sidewalks-keeping them clear and functional;  and really just making our transportation network work for people of all ages and abilities turned out to be a big theme.”

Austin City Council unanimously passed the ASMP which will guide the city’s mobility policies, projects and investments for years to come.
